The devils were named by European settlers due to their red ears, very sharp teeth and unearthly screams.  They have become an endangered species mainly due to a highly transmissible cancer called the Devil Facial Tumor Disease, first detected in 1996 which has wiped out 80% of the devil population since.   As research continues to find an effective cure/vaccination, insurance populations have been put in place around the country.
