These “bulldozers of the bush”, as they’re affectionately known, spread out across the open fields surrounding the former penal settlement of Darlington, in the island’s northwest.  The wombats on Maria Island are free from wombat mange, which has affected all three mainland Tasmanian subspecies.  They are so numerous that they're almost a "tripping hazard".
