Bennett’s white wallaby is a rare and captivating variant of the Bennett’s wallaby (Notamacropus rufogriseus), found almost exclusively on Bruny Island in Tasmania. These wallabies owe their snowy coats to a genetic mutation - some are true albinos with pink eyes and noses, while others simply lack pigment in their fur. The island’s isolation and low predator pressure have allowed this unique population to thrive, with over 200 individuals estimated. Despite their ethereal appearance, they’re just as agile and herbivorous as their grey counterparts, grazing on grasses and sheltering in coastal scrub. Their presence adds a touch of magic to Bruny’s wild landscape.
