This very sociable little fellow is named Wally and he lives on Maria Island. The wombats on Maria Island are not just abundant - they’re genetically unique. Descended from a small group translocated from Flinders Island in the 1970s, these bare-nosed wombats belong to the Bass Strait subspecies, the smallest and lightest-furred of Australia’s three distinct wombat types. Today, thousands roam the island’s open grasslands, delighting visitors with their daytime grazing and photogenic charm. Remarkably, Maria Island’s population is free from sarcoptic mange, a debilitating disease affecting wombats elsewhere, making it a vital stronghold for conservation and a living success story in species recovery.
