The orange-bellied parrot (Neophema chrysogaster) is one of the world’s rarest and most critically endangered birds, with its entire wild breeding population confined to Melaleuca in southwest Tasmania. This vibrant parrot is just 23 cm long, with bright grass-green plumage, a vivid orange belly, and a blue frontal band. Each autumn, it undertakes a remarkable migration across Bass Strait to winter in coastal Victoria and South Australia. Thanks to intensive conservation efforts - including captive breeding, the number of returning birds has recently increased, offering a glimmer of hope for this charismatic species.
