The Tasmanian silvereye (Zosterops lateralis lateralis) is a small, agile songbird easily recognized by its olive-green plumage, grey back, and the distinctive white ring around its eye - hence the name. Endemic to Tasmania, this subspecies is slightly larger and darker-flanked than its mainland relatives. These birds are highly social, often seen flitting through gardens, forests, and coastal scrub in noisy flocks. Remarkably, many undertake a long-distance migration each autumn, flying over 1,600 km from Tasmania to mainland Australia - a feat of endurance for a bird weighing just 10 grams.
