Tasmanian short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus setosus) are a unique subspecies of monotreme found only in Tasmania.  They are egg-laying mammals whose young are called “puggles”.  Tasmanian echidnas are generally hairier than their mainland relatives, helping them cope with the island’s cooler climate. Echidnas play a vital role in the ecosystem by aerating soil while foraging for ants and termites.
